Other Games Outer Rimmers Should Try #1 – Star Wars: The Card Game (LCG)

Star Wars: The Card Game is one of Fantasy Flight Games’ Living Card Games. LCGs start with a core set that allows gamers to start playing.

An LCG differs from the traditional Collectible Card Game through its card distribution method. Instead of having to buy booster packs, blindly searching for specific cards, LCGs use fixed expansion sets that all have the same cards. This allows players to compete on an equal footing. Now the game becomes about strategy and not the luck of getting the right card in the right booster or of having more money allowing the player to buy highly rated cards.
The Card Game is a two-player game where one player commands the forces of the dark side while the other commands the forces of the light side.
There are three factions on the dark side: Sith, Imperial Navy, Scum & Villainy

And three factions on the light side: Jedi, Rebel Alliance, Smugglers and Spies

A player constructs a deck using one or more of the factions. The deck building is unique in that individual cards are not compiled to create a player’s deck, but 10 objective sets are compiled. Each objective set has 6 cards: one objective and 5 cards that are added to the player’s deck (actions, events, creatures, vehicles, upgrades). Once built a player’s deck has 50 cards and 10 objectives. Once both players have created decks the game commences.
I am not going to cover how the game is played but one of the coolest attributes of this game is the winning conditions for each player. Play is asymmetrical with the dark side player trying to get the Death Star clock to completion and the light side trying to destroy 3 of the dark side’s objectives.
Here is a brief list of why you should be playing this game:
- Unique deck-building system
- Asymmetrical play
- Combat system – so many subtleties – do you kill units, objectives or use the force to disable enemies
- Edge battles – a bluffing system of deciding initiative for combat
- The force struggle – hold the force to your side and gain an advantage each turn
- The Artwork!! – the artwork created for the LCG has been used in X-wing and the Star Wars RPG and other Fantasy Flight Games’ Star Wars productions.
- The Theme – so good – so good!!
One downside – FFG cancelled this game in 2017…but don’t worry Justin and Clive own all of the cards and more!
This is one of EvilC’s favourite games of all-time if not his favourite. Razaman and EvilC have played hundreds and hundreds of Star Wars LCG battles. It is time to share this game with our great Outer Rim community.
If you want to learn how to play this game contact Justin or Clive on the Outer Rim Pilots Facebook page.
